School Profile

With on average 300 students, Kings Monkton is one of the smaller Independent Schools in Cardiff and as such prides itself on its sense of family and belonging. With a structured vision and ethos of what education should mean in the broader sense, its tradition of nurturing the individual in a variety of fields, not just academic excellence, pervades throughout the school. Each pupil is treated as an individual with a unique set of skills and gifts with which they are encouraged to flourish in a friendly and supportive environment.

Breadth and balance is the basis for the curriculum and with the added benefit of small class sizes, teachers aim to make their lessons inspirational, challenging and accessible with teaching programmes that encourage pupils to innovate and inquire. Modern and classical languages, the arts, humanities, sport and sciences (taught by individual specialists) are all accounted for.

Last year saw great academic, sporting and musical success with students representing Kings Monkton in a variety of fields from the ISA track and field finals, AVIVA championships to touring with the National Youth Orchestra for Wales. It was also a great year for students qualifying for the UK Land British Chess Gigafinal coupled with success at the Maths Olympiad.

Testament to the hard work and commitment of both students and teachers, 2009 also saw another excellent set of GCSE and A level results announced. Over a third of all GCSEs were graded A* or A with many students gaining A* in selected subjects a year early. At A level, 83% of students achieved grades A to C and, with a pass rate of 99%, the school has an impressive record for entrance to leading UK Universities.

Whilst valuing academic success, Kings Monkton also focuses on value added and all pupils are encouraged to strive to exceed their expectations. Developing the whole child is paramount in order to establish the self confidence needed for life long learning and with a broad ability range, the school values inclusivity over exclusivity to achieve in life in whichever path lies ahead. During its last inspection, the school was praised for the high quality of relationships between pupils and staff and for its high level of pastoral care.

Kings Monkton offers a number of academic, sports and music scholarships at 7+, 11+, 13+ and 16+ further details of which are available from the school office.
