Hampton Roads Academy is an independent, nonprofit, college-preparatory day school for boys and girls pre-K through grade 12. HRA was founded in 1959, enrolling 60 students that first year in grades 7-11. Over the years, the school added a sixth grade, created Middle and Upper School divisions while increasing enrollment to approximately 525 students. In 2005, Hampton Roads Academy opened its doors to Hampton Roads Country Day School, thus adding pre-K through fifth-grade instruction.
Although the academy has grown considerably, small classes remain our trademark, ensuring individual attention and an excellent education. Our student/teacher ratio remains 10:1. Each year, cultural diversity in the school is enhanced by a number of international students. At HRA, 17 percent of the student body is non white.
