School Profile

Hamilton College is a young, dynamic, co-educational school for pupils aged 5 to 18, with nursery provision from ages 3 to 5. The core focus is for all pupils to achieve high academic standards in an environment that embraces and nourishes all other aspects of a rounded education: in the arts, in music, in sport and social responsibility.

The school believes that the Christian ethos on which Hamilton College was founded will equip pupils with the necessary skills to move forward and maximise their potential in a fast moving and challenging modern world. Teachers and support staff provide students with the academic tools they require for successful school life, but they also offer appropriate care and support.

Starting at pre-school, for three to five year olds, the environment is happy, caring and safe, one in which children will learn core skills, allowing them to move confidently into the Junior School. Once in Junior School, pupils benefit from a broad and challenging curriculum, in an enjoyable and nurturing manner.

"Learning is fun" is central to the philosophy which encourages pupils to participate in school clubs such as music, drama and sports.

The Senior School at Hamilton College is an environment where pupils achieve high academic standards, but also enjoy the many and varied activities on offer. Again the focus is on academic achievement along with participation in the stimulating opportunities which are designed to develop other talents and skills. There is a supportive programme for S5 and S6 which allows pupils to make informed choices regarding their future careers.

Throughout their school life, there will be many opportunities to visit local places of educational interest. This experience is widened from Junior 7 and Senior 1, when residential experiences are offered.

During Senior School pupils will have the opportunity to participate in educational and sporting tours within the UK and Europe. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme offers additional opportunities in a varied choice of activities.

In the summer of 2009, a group of S6 pupils, under the auspices of the Tearfund Transform Project, visited Burkina Faso in West Africa. This is the second year in which Hamilton College pupils have visited the country, giving them an opportunity to build on the activities instigated by their predecessors. This year the pupils helped to teach English, they built a bike shed for local school pupils to shelter bikes from the heat, they painted a mural on the nursery wall and assisted in networking a computer laboratory. These activities provided opportunities for them to apply team working skills and demonstrate the caring ethos developed during their time at school.

Principal Miss Margaret Clarke believes that 'growing together' is the way forward. The broad curriculum and extra-curricular activities allow students to learn core subjects while enjoying the less formal and more expressive aspects of school life, such as art, drama, music and sports.
