School Profile

Founded in 1934 by Kurt Hahn, it began in two historic houses (Gordonstoun House and the famous 17th century Round Square) on a 150-acre estate in magnificent countryside. There has been much expansion and development and it is now extremely well equipped. Girls have been admitted throughout the school since 1972. The prep school, Aberlour House, has moved to the main campus, so education from ages 8-18 is provided on the one site. The school's motto is, appropriately, Plus est en vous (There is more in you than you think). Hahn's celebrated Platonic view of education aims to harness all the attributes of every pupil. It strives for all-round development and emphasises skill, enterprise, a sense of adventure and compassion, as well as self-reliance and responsibility. Hahn's vision of a school was as a place where international understanding should be fostered; about 30% of pupils come from overseas, there are regular exchanges with schools around the world and most pupils undertake work on an International Services Project. Gordonstoun's mission is 'to prepare pupils for a full and active role as international citizens in a changing world'. All pupils attend non-denominational Chapel services and assemblies. Teaching and examination results are good. A large staff allows a staff:pupil ratio of about 1:7. Music and drama are very strong and there are frequent overseas music and drama tours. A wide range of sports is offered with a high level of attainment. Outdoor pursuits include skiing, canoeing and rock-climbing and all pupils do a course in seamanship and expeditions. Not surprisingly the school has a remarkable record in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. All pupils are involved in service to the community including fire service, coastguard, mountain and inshore rescue units.
