INternational School for Primary Education (INS) , Bucharest
The International School for Primary Education provides a high standard of education for children from 2 years old up to 9 years old. During the next two years this will extend to the full primary range. The school stays truly international by accepting no more than 20% of any nationality and currently there are over 36 nationalities represented in the school. INS is a non-profit making Association and it has been established in the city for over 15 years.
In September 2009 the school opened in a purpose built building located on the shores of Lake Griviţa in the prestigious Green Lakes development. Finished to a professional standard, the classrooms are colour coded, attractive and light with integrated toilets and beautiful views. The building can accommodate up to 180 children.
As physical activity lays down pathways in the brain, the outdoor curriculum is planned in the same way as the indoor curriculum with the outside areas regarded as extensions of the classrooms. The children, therefore, work outside every day, in all weathers. At the new school there is a variety of outdoor space including a roof play area and access to a football pitch and tennis court.
The curriculum is based on best practice from around the world and includes using the Early Years Foundation Stage documents from England and The Scottish Curriculum for Excellence framework. These are adapted for an international clientele.
Staff include English, Scottish, Greek, Romanian and South African teachers who work in teams based on a 1:8 ratio.
As well as its core product, Education, INS offers a number of services to its families: Breakfast Club, an 8am drop off for working parents; After School Clubs such as drama, ballet, modern dance, computer and ball skills; Library Pack Service, packs which provide books, activities and puzzles linked around a theme; Friends of INS, a parent support network to help families settle into their new environment.
People who visit the school comment on the friendly atmosphere and the ‘family feeling’ that pervades the space. INS is a place where children thrive and learning is fun!
