This school is unique for New Zealand.
Opened in January 2001, Corelli is an independent, co-educational, specialist day school for Years 1 to 13, providing an emphasis on Music, Dance, Drama, and the Visual Arts.
With qualified staff and a comprehensive timetable, each class has a maximum of 24 pupils dedicated to the achievement of excellence in the performing and visual arts and the standard general curriculum. Up until now, this standard has only been attainable through study overseas.
Piano StudyEuropean models upon which this school is based include: The Yehudi Menuhin School and the Purcell School in London (of which David Selfe, the Principal of The Corelli School, is a graduate).
The purpose is to create an environment where the joy and appreciation of the arts is recognised and fulfilled through in-depth study, by like-minded individuals (running in conjunction with the standard curriculum). This enables graduating students to be of an international standard, therefore widening their opportunities for tertiary study or a professional career in the arts, if that is their goal.
An international advisory board of patrons has been established to safeguard the interests of The Corelli School and its place in the community.
Environment
The school is situated a few hundred metres from the beach front at Browns Bay, a short drive from the main Auckland City Centre and surrounded by popular North Shore beach suburbs, and a relaxed sea-side life style.
Special Character
Corelli is a unique opportunity for talented children. It is dedicated to both academic excellence and the development of outstanding artistic ability in music, dance, drama and the visual arts. Every arts pupil gets tuition in at least two artistic specialties and each is regularly exposed to individual public performance and internationally recognised academic and artistic examinations. The school is small, has a supportive atmosphere, and family values are practised.
Corelli School StudentsCourses
Pupils are required to study to the Cambridge International Examination curriculum and sit Cambridge IGCSE AS and A level examinations to Sixth Form (Year 12) and international music and drama examinations including Cambridge Music examinations, Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College, London.
Corelli achieved first place in IGCSE Music examinations in 2004 and 2005, and a "Top Centre" award two years running from Cambridge International for consistently high academic results.
Facilities
Despite its exclusively small roll, Corelli is distinguished by a focus on its artistic output represented by an auditorium, audio recording studio, widespread practice rooms and musical facilities. It is fully equipped as an academic institution and boasts a modern science laboratory. Specialist tutors teach dance, music, drama and visual arts and academic studies are managed by separate qualified experts.
International Students >>>
The school has attracted a number of international students from within New Zealand and overseas and is truly multicultural. English is spoken but ESOL studies can be arranged. The school is popular with new immigrant families seeking to combine ongoing academic excellence with artistic ability demonstrated by their children.
Accommodation
Corelli will help organise Home-stay for qualifying age groups, generally with the families of other pupils.
School Criteria
Day School, 5 to 18, Co-educational, 80+ pupils, Secular.
