School Profile

ASSETS School specializes in serving children and young people whose capability is greater than their academic achievement as well as those in need of acceleration and enrichment. Informal counseling and behavior management are central to an ASSETS education and are integrated into all programs.

Day programs for the gifted, gifted-dyslexic, and dyslexic student provide a supportive environment where classes are small and curriculum is individualized and matched to meet a child's specific needs. Faculty are specially trained to provide acceleration, remediation, and enrichment. Developmental programs are provided to dyslexic students who need structured language intervention using a multi-sensory approach (Orton-Gillingham, Slingerland, Project Read and ASSETS's own Advanced Language Curriculum). Gifted students are taught using Kaplan's Differentiated-Integrated curriculum model as well as Renzulli's model. A selection of elective and enrichment courses for all students is balanced between technology, athletics, and the visual and performing arts, and encourages curiosity, self-expression and the acquisition of skills and concepts.

The K-8 program is taught in self-contained, small-group classrooms where the student-to-teacher ratio is 8:1. Student Profiles based on comprehensive psycho-educational testing are developed for each child and form the basis of class placement and curricular decisions.

The High School program offers small-group instruction and provides study skills support to students. Independence and accountability are fostered through a carefully structured progression of courses and activities. Classroom accommodations, assistive technology and individualized instruction are balanced with strategies designed to enhance reading, writing, thinking, and math skills. Mentorship provides opportunities for students to explore career options, pursue passions and capitalize on their strengths in hands-on, community-based learning experiences. Placements have included research labs, museums, radio stations, businesses and offices. One hundred percent of the graduates of the Class of 2007 were accepted into colleges and universities in Hawaii and on the mainland.
