School Profile

Withington Girls' School was founded in 1890 by a group of far-sighted Manchester businessmen and women. In line with their principles it has remained relatively small, with about 650 pupils, of whom 90 are in the Junior Department and 160 in the Sixth Form. This size allows a friendly, intimate environment together with a broad and balanced curriculum. Withington provides a wide range of opportunitites for girls, helping them to acheive their potential, academically, socially and personally. Pupils come from a wide geographical area and from many different social and cultural backgrounds. The School's A-level and GCSE results consistently place it in the top ten in national league tables and girls also achieve outstanding success in sport, music, drama, DoE, Young Enterprise, MUN, Science and Mathematics Challenges and Olympiads. There is a broad range of extra-curricular clubs and societies. Pupils also participate in many fundraising activities and the school has special links with a hospital and two schools in Kenya, a school in Uganda and various community projects in The Gambia. The School has partnerships with local state schools and Academies and the Northern Chamber Orchestra. Visitors are warmly welcome at any time. Open Days are held in November. A number of means-tested Governors' bursaries are awarded annually together with awards from various Trusts. Entry at age 7-11 is by entrance examination, held in January, together with interview and report from current school. Admission to the Sixth Form is by interview, report from current school and conditional upon GCSE results. Preparation for life after school starts early and involves a programme of careers advice, work experience and UCAS guidance. All girls leave to enter higher education at a range of top universities including Oxford and Cambridge.
