Vinehall School is unusual in combining a noticeably friendly and happy atmosphere with impressive achievements academically, in music, drama, art and also sport. Centred around a country house constructed in the late 1830s, Vinehall boasts a wide range of excellent modern facilities which serve to enhance the education and opportunities for our children. These include:
A magnificent Millennium Building, comprising classrooms, a dedicated laboratory for teaching Information Communication Technology (ICT), numerous additional computers and a library;
A Science block;
A dedicated Music block;
An Art, Design and Technology centre in which the latter is equipped with a range of machinery and networked computers for computer aided design and computer control;
An excellent purpose built theatre in which the children perform plays and musicals several times each year;
An indoor Sports Hall, with an adjoining indoor heated swimming pool;
A most attractive purpose built Pre-Prep school;
An adventure playground, extensive playing fields and a 9 hole golf course.
At Vinehall School we believe that every child is blessed with many talents and it is our purpose and duty to discover these talents and nurture them as best we can. We are a close, caring and busy community in which staff and parents are expected to work very much as a team, with the children as our central concern. We foster a positive attitude to life, encouraging a 'have-a-go' attitude. We want our children to be happy, to develop a sense of self, to contribute to their community and also the wider world. At Vinehall, children will experience a broad range of subjects and activities and will come to know what they enjoy and what they are good at, at the same time as appreciating the strengths of others. We celebrate all kinds of success and children can reach outstandingly high standards in music, drama, art, sports and academic areas. At the same time, our ethos is inclusive. All children are expected to play in matches for the school and participate in plays and almost all learn at least one instrument. We hope that all children will pursue an area of special interest at school. As the children move through Vinehall, they become more independent in preparation for their next school and Vinehall is especially good at helping the children to organise their own learning. Boarding at the top end of the school is an important part of each child's personal development and the children appreciate the great benefits of boarding, especially in encouraging social development.
Vinehall is a partly-selective school whose aim is to give our pupils a broad, all-round education. Our principal aim is to encourage our pupils to make the most of every opportunity and to enable them to achieve the highest standards of academic, cultural and athletic achievement of which they are capable. This is done by fostering a sense of self-discipline and organisation in the pupils. The curriculum is based on the structure laid down by the Early Years and then the National Curriculum up to Year 6, whilst allowing us the freedom to develop certain parts of the curriculum further, where appropriate. In Years 7 and 8 the curriculum is determined by the Syllabi for Common Entrance and Scholarships through which we prepare the pupils for entrance to schools of their parents' choice at 13+.
A stimulating and well-structured programme is used to deliver the curriculum including a sensible mix of formal and informal work. At times the pupils are expected to listen, take notes and write or learn quietly, whilst at other times they will be working in groups, discussing or sharing their ideas in an investigative way. They are encouraged to show initiative and enterprise, to co-operate together and to research effectively for themselves. At Vinehall a dedicated team works hard to make boarding an extremely attractive option. Vinehall has a well-established boarding community of boys and girls. It is very much the heart of the school. A few of our boarders are from overseas or other parts of the country. Most are local children. Boarding is 'full' rather than on a weekly basis although there are regular exeat weekend breaks and boarders may go out for special occasions. Families are very welcome to visit.
