School Profile

Taverham Hall Preparatory School is an increasingly modern, forward thinking school where academic excellence flourishes alongside creativity and fun for boys and girls aged 1 to 13 years old. How pupils learn is just as important as what they learn and the school, in its second year under new leadership, believes that education should stretch, inspire and develop every child. It's all about opportunity and choice and offering a stimulating balance between indoor and outdoor learning experiences.

Personalised Learning
Central to this, is the school's commitment to personalised learning and target setting as well as an awareness of each individual's learning style. Every child is different, so identifying how they learn most effectively is where the school focuses much of its effort. This subsequently provides each child with the tools they need to guide them through their academic life.

New Marking Policy
In addition, for marking to be effective, it must be more than simply an exercise in correction. Children are trained to see the teachers' comments as the most important element of assessment. The school's new marking policy of 'two stars and a wish' is paying real dividends and is proving to be a successful way of keeping pupils focused on agreed targets and consequently encouraging self-assessment and self-correction. Recognition and praise is given for achievement as well as clear strategies for improvement.

Courtesy, good manners and the highest level of pastoral care remain the cornerstone of a Taverham Hall education and these factors combined with academic effort, progress and attainment are all celebrated weekly and most emphatically in a thrice yearly end of term assembly.

Communication - Link Between Home and School
As pupils progress through the school, they take increased responsibility for their learning and conduct, as well as gaining leadership roles within the school, with the opportunity for all to have prefect status in their final year. Form tutors play a key role and many parents have commented on how much they enjoy the increased communication through the weekly newsletters and the greater involvement in school life. Weekly drop-in clinics with form tutors ensure the opportunity for a regular, relaxed and vital link between home and school.

The examination results at scholarship and common entrance level are impressive, with over sixty scholarships having been won over the past decade. At the end of the last academic year all the Year 8 leavers gained places at their first choice schools, several with scholarships.

Learning outside the classroom - Forest School
A broad and varied range of subjects are tackled inside the classroom with the aid of brand new interactive whiteboards whilst outside lessons take place through our innovative Forest School programme which adds a thrilling extra dimension across the curriculum.

A range of evidence, originating in Scandinavia and supported by the British Government, validates the importance of hands-on learning outside the classroom:

"When planned and implemented well, learning outside the classroom contributed significantly to raising standards and improving pupils' personal, social and emotional development." Ofsted, October 2008.

Taverham Hall School Nursery was inspected by Ofsted on 20th January 2010. The results make extremely pleasing reading. The overall effectiveness of the Early Years provision was rated as "outstanding".

National Curriculum subjects are reinforced and supported by practical, hands-on learning. Pupils are inspired to get involved, use their initiatives, work together and air their views. Carefully planned and supervised activities allow children to take risks and make choices appropriate to their age and ability. Learning follows 'enquiry through exploration' principles and many children visibly grow in self-esteem and confidence. Our qualified Forest School teachers have achieved level 3 - OCN Forest School Leader Award status which ensures that they are delivering to the highest standard of Forest School practitioners.

In addition, field studies are regularly undertaken for subject matters such as science and geography and girls and boys take responsibility for tending their own gardens and vegetable plots and care for the school's pet animals. The beautiful grounds are also a wonderful source of inspiration for art, drama and music.
