School Profile

'We believe we are a leading Catholic school because throughout our 400 year history we have always aspired to treat our pupils as individuals, academically, spiritually and emotionally, in keeping with our Jesuit tradition; as a result our young men and women leave us equipped to think for themselves and provide leadership in the contemporary world.'

Stonyhurst is a coeducational Catholic boarding and day school for pupils aged 13-18 guided by the principles of the Society of Jesus. This means that we attach particular importance to emotional and spiritual development as well as academic excellence. Any boy or girl who would benefit from the education we offer is welcome to apply for a place at Stonyhurst. In addition to young Catholics, we have young people here who belong to other Christian traditions, and other faiths, and we encourage all of them to play a full part in the spiritual life of the school.

At the heart of the Jesuit educational philosophy is knowing each individual pupil in our care so we can help them to achieve their full potential in all that they do. This means having the highest possible expectations of our pupils' academic achievements, encouraging them to develop a range of sporting and artistic interests, and urging them to accept leadership responsibilities as a way of serving others, following the example of Jesus Christ, the "man for others".
