School Profile
'We believe we are a leading school because 'St Catherine's is a learning school in which a state of satisfaction with anything but the best is not on the agenda'. (ISI Report) As a girls' school, no subjects are 'off limits'; every subject is a girl's subject.'
The School
'Educational provision, in the full sense of those words, is outstanding because, above all, St Catherine's is a learning school in which a state of satisfaction with anything but the best is not on the agenda.' ISI Report 2007.
St Catherine's, Bramley is firmly established as one of the top independent girls' schools in the country. Within an hour of central London and Heathrow and Gatwick airports, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Surrey Hills, St Catherine's offers the buzz of a busy day school with the vibrancy of a thriving boarding community.
Boarding
Girls are welcome as weekly or full boarders. St Catherine's proximity to both London and miles of countryside creates exciting opportunities for extra-curricular activities both in the evenings and at weekends. The Independent School Inspectors found that 'The quality of pastoral care in all boarding houses is outstanding'. Parents appreciate that boarding at St Catherine's, Bramley offers the academic excellence of the London day schools without the pressure on places but most importantly they value the School's atmosphere in which their daughters clearly thrive and enjoy their school days. A flexible approach at weekends allows parents whose daughters are going home to be collected on Friday evenings or Saturdays and equally, many choose to return on Sunday evening or in time for registration on Monday morning. We understand families want to spend as much time together, but not necessarily sitting in traffic jams!
Education plus...
GCSE and A-level results are consistently amongst the best in the country. As a girls' only school, there are no subjects which are 'off bounds'. Every subject is a 'girl's' subject which is why the uptake amongst St Catherine's pupils for Mathematics, Design & Technology and the Sciences is so high.
As you might expect, most St Catherine's girls achieve their first choice places at the UK's leading universities including Oxbridge and the Russell Group. Girls who enjoy pace and challenge thrive, gaining the opportunity to exceed their own expectations. Opportunities abound in an all girls' school and by the time they are in the Sixth Form, girls take on real roles of responsibility; they are, for example, pivotal in running the School Houses, leading choirs, directing plays, and raising money for charities.
Music, drama, dance and sport can be enjoyed at every level of expertise. Girls play lacrosse, netball and swim for their national teams; they can learn almost any instrument of their choice and perform in any one of many orchestras, bands and choirs. A thriving Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme takes advantage of the miles of open countryside on our doorstep so that a number of St Catherine's students have achieved the prestigious Gold Award by the time they go to university. 'Culture Vultures' visit the key London galleries, shows and exhibitions. Each year, during Activities Week all girls travel near and far, undertaking personal challenges and extending their knowledge and understanding in particular subjects; a History and Geography expedition to the north-west, outdoor pursuits in the Brecon Beacons and modern languages trips to France, Germany and Spain amongst others.
All members of the School, past and present, enjoy involvement with the St Catherine's Association through regular newsletters and events. Girls at St Catherine's gain far more than a first-class education. They forge lifelong friendships; loyalties to the School are very strong. St Catherine's girls leave us, knowledgeable about the world, caring of others and fully prepared to take their place as young women of the 21stC.
