School Profile
Founded in 1914 by the Sisters of Mercy, St Catherine's moved from its original site to its current location in 1919. Today the school is under lay management. St Catherine's is a Catholic School in the ecumenical tradition, and pupils of all denominations are welcome.
Aims
Our aim is to provide an excellent all-round education so that every pupil can achieve her personal best. We strive to provide a broad and balanced education within a stimulating and supportive environment which encourages learning without undue pressure. Success is achieved through personal responsibility, high expectations and a close partnership between parents and school. Emphasis is placed on self-discipline, responsibility and the importance of kindness, concern and respect for others. Since we are a relatively small school the staff are able to know the pupils as individuals. There is a strong sense of community and it takes no time at all for a girl to make friends.
Situation
The School enjoys an enviable position being located next to the River Thames. It is a short distance from the centre of Twickenham and approximately 10-15 minutes' walk from Strawberry Hill and Twickenham Stations. Both have regular services to London (Waterloo), Surrey, Berkshire and Middlesex. There are also a number of local bus routes.
Entrance
Main points of entry are at 3, 7 and 11 but girls are accepted at any stage subject to space. Places at the school are usually awarded on the basis of an interview, a report from the candidate's previous school and an assessment (examination in the senior school).
Scholarships and Bursaries
Academic Scholarships, up to the value of 50% of the fees, are awarded annually at 11+ on the basis of the entrance examination and interview. Music, Sports and Art Awards are also awarded annually following an audition/assessment and are conditional on the applicant achieving the School's academic requirement for entry.
A limited number of Bursaries are offered depending on need and funds available.
Curriculum
In the Senior School pupils follow courses in English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Studies, History, Geography, Drama, Music, Art, PSHE and Physical Education. All pupils in Years 7 to 9 study both French and German, Spanish is offered at GCSE. Emphasis is also placed on the development of ICT skills and the school has two ICT Suites that can accommodate whole classes. Most pupils study nine or ten subjects to GCSE level.
There is a strong commitment to sports, music, drama and extra-curricular activities. The school has its own hockey pitch and indoor swimming pool as well as tennis and netball courts. Sports include swimming, netball, athletics, hockey, tennis, gymnastics and rounders and our pupils achieve considerable success at county, regional and national level.
Music plays an important part in the life of the school; all pupils are encouraged to participate in choirs, orchestras and ensembles, and the varied programme of concerts and informal performances. Drama is popular and regular theatre visits take place during the year.
Buildings
The Preparatory and Senior departments are on one site. The buildings include a large multi-purpose hall as well as a smaller assembly hall, a well-stocked Library, two ICT Suites, a spacious Art room with a Pottery and Photography room, and a Food Technology Room. The Music Centre has class and individual practice rooms. There are fully-equipped laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Extra-Curricular Activities
These play a significant role in the school. Activities include the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, Spanish, Badminton, Science Club, Football, Rugby, Chess and Photography. Trips, both locally and abroad, add to the extensive range of activities on offer. Pupils also take part in community service and fund-raising activities.
