School Profile

Sherborne Prep School is a happy and thriving co-educational, independent day and boarding school for children aged 3 - 13 years. It is situated on the Somerset/Dorset border in the historic town of Sherborne, which is also home to the leading senior schools Sherborne School and Sherborne School for Girls.

Sherborne Prep has an outstanding academic record with 16 scholarships and awards achieved this year. We are a non-selective school which helps children of all abilities achieve their best and encourages them to make the most of their time and life live to the full. They learn to develop good study skills and a love of learning so they continue to do well at Britain's leading independent senior schools - and beyond. Children are encouraged to develop a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, resilience and the ability to think independently. They learn to care about others and have confidence in themselves.

Pastoral care is very important at Sherborne Prep where the small class sizes and community ensure the School can focus on the children, making them feel secure and relaxed within a caring family atmosphere. From Year 6 each child, whether boarding or day, has their own pastoral tutor. The welfare of the boarders is also supervised by dedicated boarding staff, in a cosy family atmosphere. Boarding is great fun and teaches the children to develop confidence and independence in a safe environment.

Entry is by interview with the Headmaster, and scholarships for academic, musical, sporting and all round ability are offered annually in February.

The Pre-Prep is situated on the same site and forms a secure, self-contained unit within the School for three to six year-olds, which at the same time allows the younger children to take advantage of many of the facilities available to the Prep School children. It has been characterised by the happiness as well as the success of its children and enjoys a well-deserved reputation as a pre-prep that offers a wide, up-to-date exciting curriculum within a caring, ordered and above all friendly environment.

Since leaving the home environment is an important and exciting step in a young child's life, the approach in the Nursery is to create a happy, settled atmosphere. As the children move through the school they are encouraged to think for themselves so they go into the main school with a measure of independence and a good foundation for future learning.

We want children to leave Sherborne Prep with the skills and values they need for life, an appreciation of others, a hunger to learn, a sense of worth, an ability to communicate, a sense of purpose, and an honest work ethic.
