School Profile

Queen Margaret's is a school where girls aim high and exceed their expectations. At the heart of a QM education is a love of learning supported by a healthy body and a healthy mind. It is a selective school for girls aged 11 to 18 years old and is one of the very few remaining girls' schools in which around 90% are boarders. Nestled in 65 acres of Yorkshire countryside, about six miles south of York, QM is fully equipped with all the facilities you would expect from a leading independent school, yet small enough to provide a homely atmosphere. At Queen Margaret's girls thrive in an environment where they are treated as individuals, encouraged to think for themselves and to participate in a wealth of clubs, activities and societies outside academic lessons. QM is a lively and modern school for girls who aspire to be leaders in every walk of life.

Outstanding teaching and academic excellence
QM girls take advantage of the rich and complementary programme of studies and activities available to them. In doing so, they achieve excellence inside and outside the classroom and become interesting, well-informed and confident members of the community. The School offers a full range of academic subjects at GCSE, AS- and A-level, and examination results are consistently excellent. Our public examination results in 2010 put us among the top schools in the country with 93% of entries achieving grades A*-B at A Level and 99% of entries achieving A*-C at GCSE.

A thriving boarding community
QM is a community of people who care for each other and grow as individuals. Around 90% of pupils are boarders and most girls join us at age 11, but significant numbers also come to QM at 12, 13 and 16 and will stay with us through to the sixth form before moving on to higher education. The quality of pastoral care and strong sense of community ensure that all girls settle in quickly and join in every aspect of school life with enthusiasm and purpose.

Throughout the School, boarding is arranged by year group, with each year under the care of well-qualified housemistresses and their assistants. Accommodation is tailored to the needs of each age group so that first-year girls live in a large, comfortable family house surrounded by its own garden and an adventure playground, while the upper sixth live independently in picturesque cottages in the School grounds.

Sport and activities
Sport is very important at QM and our girls thrive on healthy and energetic lifestyles. As well as representing the School to an excellent standard, many QM girls are selected for regional and national sports teams. The School has exceptional facilities including an Astroturf, a sports hall, a competition swimming pool, all-weather tennis courts, squash courts, a nine-hole golf course and a riding school adjacent to the main School campus. Main activities are lacrosse, hockey, tennis, netball, rounders, swimming and athletics.

The creative and performing arts
The creative arts play a central role in life at QM. The purpose-built theatre and dance studio and modern art and technology facilities provide the ideal setting for every girl to discover and develop her talents.

Girls leave Queen Margaret's with an enthusiasm for learning and friendships which will last a lifetime.

History

Queen Margaret's was established in Scarborough in 1901 by the Woodard Foundation, an organisation committed to the establishment of boarding schools where teaching would be firmly based on the Christian religion. Following evacuation to Pitlochry during the First World War, and then to Castle Howard during the Second, the school finally came to Escrick Park, six miles south of York, in 1949.

Previously, this magnificent country house, built with the assistance of John Carr in 1758 and set in almost seventy acres of beautiful parkland, had been a private residence. The Main Building retains the atmosphere of a spacious home - yet it is now the nucleus of a school for some 365 girls.

In 1986, following an initiative by the parents and governors, the school was re-established under a new company, limited by guarantee and registered with the Charities Commission. At the same time the school became independent of the Woodard Foundation.
