School Profile
Introduction
Northwood College is an academic school for girls with two very special features at its heart: our unique Thinking Skills Programme enables girls to develop independent and creative thinking that takes them far beyond an exam curriculum. Our unrivalled pastoral care, meanwhile, rests on the premise that a happy girl will always achieve her best. In this way we have created a school that buzzes with life, in which girls achieve outstanding results.
Thinking skills
The Thinking Skills Programme is integrated into the whole curriculum and runs from Nursery up to the Sixth Form. The Programme teaches the girls to understand and develop the way they learn. Over the years, they build up their reasoning skills, improve their creativity and acquire strategies for tackling complex problems and decisions. It gives the girls a life skill that will be as useful at university and in the workplace as it is now.
Curriculum and Results
All National Curriculum subjects are taught, plus Latin, Classics and Drama. In addition, girls in Year 7 study two modern foreign languages chosen from French, German and Spanish.
Our girls achieve outstanding results: for the past five years the A Level pass rate has been 100%, with nearly 83% at A & B grades in 2007. At GCSE our pass rate was 99.4% and more than three quarters of our girls achieve more than 5 A or A* grades. Last year, Northwood College girls came in the top 10 nationally in English Literature (AQA), Biology and Physics (Edexcel) and this year Northwood College girls came in the top five nationally in English Literature (AQA) and Drama (AQA) and top 10 in Biology (Edexcel).
Pupil Wellbeing
We take the challenge of turning out happy, confident and generous young women very seriously. Northwood College creates an atmosphere in which courtesy, respect and self-respect thrive. Girls are taught to understand and respect the other person's point of view and to show good manners at all times. In keeping with this ethos, the College operates a system of Credits and Commendations from the Head Mistress to reward good behaviour and attitude, as well as work.
Location and Facilities
We are located in Northwood, close to public transport routes by bus and tube (Metropolitan Line) and also have an extensive series of school coaches which cover areas including Edgware, Stanmore, Kenton, Gerrards Cross, Beaconsfield, Chorleywood, Kenton, Harrow, Borehamwood, Radlett, Bushey, Greenford, Uxbridge, Hillingdon and South Ruislip.
All sections of the school, Nursery, Infants, Junior, Senior and Sixth Form, share the same 14 acre site. It's a beautiful green environment with many specialist facilities, including eight Science Labs, five high-tech IT Rooms, three Art Studios, Food Technology and Design Technology Rooms, a large Sports Hall, Fitness Suite, 25-metre Indoor Swimming Pool and a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Centre. The Centre comprises a Recital Room, Drama Studio, numerous practice and class rooms, a Music Technology Suite and a Professional Recording Studio.
Finally, we'd like to mention our spectacular Centenary Library which is one of the learning hubs of the College. Occupying the school's original vaulted gymnasium, the Library has more than 11,000 books and a wealth of other resources. Our passionate full-time Chartered Librarian runs Book Clubs, arranges talks by well-known authors and generally inspires the girls with a love of reading.
Entry Requirements and Scholarships
Entry to the College is by examination and interview. We offer a number of Academic, Art, Music and PE Scholarships at 11+ as well as Sixth Form Academic Scholarships. There are also several means-tested bursaries available.
