The modern world is highly competitive and the way we prepare our children for its demands is more important than ever. Young people today are subject to great pressures and it takes strong personalities to avoid the traps that life has lying in wait. A good school must seek to develop confidence and maturity in all its pupils whatever their strengths or weaknesses; ensuring an education that is concerned with nurturing the whole child and not just their exam results. All individuals have different needs and therefore a variety of opportunities must be available to enable each one to achieve success. Our children must learn to apply themselves to academic work but must also be encouraged to express their other talents to succeed in their future ambitions.
Founded by Jack Meyer ('Boss') in 1935, Millfield School has a long tradition of successfully encouraging pupils to fulfil their potential. With our outstanding facilities, a staff:pupil ratio of 1:7.5, an extraordinary range of academic courses and the unrivalled strength of our extra-curricular programme, Millfield strives to give the best all round education available. We also seek to move with the times whilst maintaining the important traditions of good manners, discipline and respect for others. We pride ourselves on the richness and diversity of the Millfield experience as well as the friendly atmosphere within our community. A range of sporting, artistic and academic scholarships are available, ensuring the continuation of 'the Millfield mix' that is so fundamental to the schools social diversity.
Our Preparatory School was founded in 1946. It shares the aims and ethos of the Senior School although it enjoys its own extensive self-contained site near Glastonbury. The School aims to develop the individual abilities and talents of each boy or girl and the group tutor system and boarding houseparents help to keep this goal always in sight. Small teaching groups, separate boarding houses and excellent staff:pupil ratio all ensure that no child is lost among large numbers. There is an exceptionally wide range of activities and the facilities are superb. There are many opportunities for both individual sports and team games, and the School competes in regional and national competitions in many of these. New buildings in the last few years include dining room, library, music school, recital hall, 25 metre indoor pool and two classroom blocks including a suite of four IT rooms, two new boarding houses and an equestrian centre. A new sports hall, a refurbished astro turf and Gym have recently been completed, with plans to build a new sailing and fishing lake.
Most pupils transfer to Millfield at the age of 13; the academic curriculum prepares them for Millfield and for other leading independent schools, with full account being taken of the National Curriculum. Entry to Millfield Preparatory School is at any age from 2-13, and is based on interview and a report from the present school. There are a number of Scholarships awarded each year.
