Marymount International School, London is an independent Catholic day and boarding school that welcomes girls of all faiths, aged 11 to 18. Students follow the International Baccalaureate programme, recognised globally by universities as a benchmark of quality in education.

As one of the first schools in the UK to offer the IB programme, Marymount excels with experience and continues to place in the top 10% of 800 UK schools - 14th position of 0ver 900 schools as listed in 'The Times Top Schools 2006.' Students work hard and achieve outstanding results - two students in 2007 obtained perfect scores (45 for the IB Diploma, equivalent to six A grades for 'A' levels,) and nearly all continue on to university.

Located on a private estate, just 12 miles from central London, Marymount London was founded in 1955 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, and is a member of the global network of Marymount Schools. The student body at Marymount London is made up of 240 girls, representing over 30 countries. Class sizes are small and study programmes are planned to meet the needs of individual students.

Providing excellent facilities and an experienced teaching faculty, our students work hard and have fun!

The school aims to educate young women to become the global leaders of tomorrow and follows the example of its founders, 'that all may have life and have it to the full.'

Joanna's story :

All students in Grade 10 (Year 11 in the UK) are required to produce a Personal Project. Joanna decided to create a 'Survival Guide to Boarding at Marymount' and with her permission, extracts are shown below.

Coming here was my decision and I was very excited throughout summer. However, I was scared at the same time because I didn't know what to expect. Moreover, I had lived with my family my whole life, so I wasn't used to standing on my own feet!

I still can't forget the first day of school. I had all my suitcases ready and the driver put them all in the trunk. Everything was fine until I got in the car. As we got close to the school, I started feeling sick and I got overexcited. When we had arrived, I didn't get out of the car and even the driver was laughing at me. I saw girls standing with their suitcases. It's not hard to guess who is new and who is not. The girls who have a blank expression on their faces, looking around not knowing what to do, are obviously new. I was one of them.

After a short while, I met staff and students and went up to my room. I was hoping that my roommate will be a nice girl because your roommate is the person you see the most. I was lucky in that case. When I was getting my uniform in Bentalls, I had met a girl called Fidelia and I hoped that she would be my roommate and it turned out to be that way.

I unpacked all my stuff and went out to meet some new girls. At the end of the day, everything turned out to be fine.

It took me a couple of weeks to get used to the school. It was hard but when I think about those weeks now, it was worth it. I'm happy where I am. Everyone has settled down and we all are like a big family. I learned things that I would never be able to learn if I was living with my own family. It's a big experience for everyone and I think many of the girls matured a lot.

Living with a lot of people, sharing the same bathroom and the showers, using the same machines to wash your clothes, eating at the same place at the same time for days and days, coming into your room and realizing that from now on you have to share your room with someone else who comes from a different country than you, learning to cry together and to share the same emotions, knowing that when you get out of your room there are other people around - these are all the pros that I had to learn in a year. It was hard and emotionally you can feel down but in the end, you realize that you get so much stronger.

What I want to say is that the beginning of the year is hard, but it will all quickly get better!
