School Profile

'We think we are a leading school because we make a difference: our students enjoy a rigorous, rounded IB education in an international environment, and leave us as independent thinkers and learners, with outstanding academic results, well equipped for success at top universities in the UK and around the world.'

Achievement through partnership
King Edward's School offers a blend of forward-thinking and traditional values that provides a secure environment in which young people can be nurtured through the transition from childhood to adulthood. With pupils from a very wide variety of academic, social, economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, we place great emphasis on providing a high level of pastoral care where individual pupil needs have priority. In this way, we successfully integrate pupils from over 30 different countries into a community in which all individuals can thrive - an achievement matched by few other schools. Scholarships are offered to pupils aged 11 and over, awarded on the basis of an examination held annually in January and February. There is also a range of artistic and music scholarships. The core curriculum is reviewed regularly and currently includes English language, English literature, biology, design technology, chemistry, physics, French, German, Latin, mathematics, religious studies, IT, art, music, home technology, history, geography and classical civilisation.

International Baccalaureate
The range of A-level (AS/A2) courses offered at King Edward's is extensive covering some 23 subjects, and we now offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma as an alternative with approximately 50% of Sixth Form pupils taking this option. It is a qualification recognised by universities throughout the world and provides a broader educational option. The second group of students have completed their IB course and have really distinguished themselves. Not only have they continued the 100% success rate of the previous year they also scored an impressive average of 35.5 points out of a maximum 45. This puts King Edward's in eighth place in the Top Twenty International Baccalaureate Schools in England and Wales 2007.

Digital campus
All third-, fourth- and fifth-form pupils are provided with a laptop computer as part of their school equipment, inclusive within fees, and have filtered access to the internet and e-mail in all parts of the School.

Music and the Arts
We have always been a strong advocate of dance and drama and our purpose-built dance and drama studio has proved immensely popular with our pupils. We have also been very proactive in developing the marvellous artistic standards pupils have achieved over the years. 'VivArtis', the School's acclaimed festival of the arts, has for over ten years been bringing together the outside art and music world with our own pupils and the local community in an exciting series of 'hands-on' activities, exhibitions and performances.

Sport
Some 100 acres of sports pitches plus a brand-new all-weather playing area accommodate netball, rounders, cricket, hockey, football and athletics. A modern sports hall provides first-class facilities, including a large indoor swimming pool, a weights fitness centre and good quality changing areas. There is also an extensive tennis complex.

CAS programme
The School's co-curriculum programme is based on the IB CAS scheme. This covers a wide range of Creative, Action and Service activities, and, to help further their all-round development, all pupils are expected during the course of the year to have taken part in all three areas.

Campus facilities
Self-contained on an attractive campus, the School has always been co-educational and has pioneered paired houses with communal areas, where everyone can come together in their spare time.

Location
Approximately ten miles south of Guildford, with Heathrow and Gatwick Airports both within 45 minutes' drive via the M25.

Witley station is a short walk away and is on the main London Waterloo to Portsmouth line, with frequent services to Guildford, where passengers change for the short journey to Witley.
