School Profile

The School
The King's School Canterbury may be one of the oldest schools in the world, but it is also one of the finest 21st century co-educational boarding schools in the UK. Its situation in the Cathedral Precincts, in the centre of the ancient city of Canterbury, is genuinely inspiring, but behind the medieval facade is a truly modern school. King's is a full boarding school and does not offer weekly or flexible boarding. Pupils can take any three exeats (weekends out) per term but the school does not close for any weekend and, as a result, the majority of pupils are at school for the majority of weekends. The school is a thriving community which prides itself on the extent and depth of its pastoral care.

Curriculum
Academic excellence is central to the success of King's and most pupils move on to the top universities in the UK and the USA. The A level curriculum allows our pupils to study their chosen four subjects in great depth but it also allows space for the pupils to follow particular interests outside the classroom. Music, drama and sport are obvious strengths but minority interests are always catered for. Currently there are over 700 individual music lessons per week, more than 20 pupils are members of national teams and between 20 and 30 gain entry to Oxford or Cambridge each year.

Entry and Admissions
Entry to King's is normally through the Common Entrance examination but many are admitted through the internal King's School Entry Examination held in February each year. Examinations for Academic, Music and Art Scholarships are held in March for those entering at 13, and in November for Sixth Form entry. It is most important that parents start the Admissions process early; ideally three years in advance of entry. Private visits can be arranged through the Admissions Office.

King's Week
This festival of music, drama, and art takes place at the end of the summer term. While most schools wind down towards the end of the academic year King's pupils finish theirs with this extraordinary week of performing arts. Some 35 music, drama and dance performances are complemented by exhibitions, meditations and talks. The week ends with the Gala Symphony Concert and Commemoration Day.
