Horris Hill aims to provide a high quality and stimulating education for boys aged 7+ to 13. Whilst the school enjoys a reputation for academic success, the school's enviable facilities allow each child the opportunities to discover and develop other talents whether they be sporting, artistic, musical or personal.
Horris Hill is well known for its fine academic record over the years at both Common Entrance and Scholarship level. We aim to retain the traditional values of hard work and structured learning whilst embracing new technologies to complement the learning experience. The youngest boys start in the dedicated Junior Department and their programme is very much seen as a bridge between the experiences they will have had at their previous schools and the time that they will spend in the main part of the school, where subjects will increasingly be taught by subject specialists.
Each boy has the opportunity to develop and extend his awareness and appreciation of the cultural and sporting life of the school through formal lessons in Art and Music and PE, and regular educational trips are arranged to galleries, concerts and professional sporting events. The Art Room is well-used in free time and boys' artistic work is displayed throughout the school. The Music Department is housed in a new, state of the art building with its own performance hall and boys can receive tuition in a full range of instruments. There are numerous groups and ensembles to encourage performing and working together as a team. Horris Hill has a strong tradition of excellence at sport and all boys have the opportunity to participate in school teams with fixtures being arranged at all levels.
Horris Hill is committed to the boarding ethos and a full programme of activities is available at weekends. Great and lasting friendships are formed in a safe and caring environment where every child matters. Boys start their boarding career in the main school and move into two senior houses in the grounds for their final two years. There is a flexible leave-out system built around fixed exeats each term and the school recognises the wishes of parents to have regular contact with their sons. There are clear opportunities each day for boys to send and receive e-mails and each boarding area has telephones. Horris Hill is proud of its delivery of pastoral care which is underpinned by a system of tutors. Boys are guided and encouraged at all stages of their career in the school and particular attention is paid to respecting and understanding others in a vibrant community.
