Holmewood House is described by The Good Schools Guide as a 'top prep school' and by a current parent as 'a happy and vibrant school, full of opportunities.' Holmewood is renowned for its highly qualified staff, superb facilities and broad curriculum (covering all aspects of the National Curriculum, Common Entrance and scholarship examinations to independent schools), resulting in outstanding academic results. We encourage all children to achieve their true potential in a warm and friendly atmosphere, by fostering confidence and enthusiasm.
Set in over 30 acres of beautiful grounds, Holmewood is a happy busy place, where every child is considered unique. We have strong Sport, Music, Drama and Art departments and offer a wide range of opportunities, so all our children find something to inspire them.
We have a bright and airy purpose-built self-contained Nursery where children spend one year, before moving to our Pre-Prep department for three further academic years. The Nursery and Pre-Prep children are therefore in a more cosy environment but with the advantage that they use all the Prep School facilities from the start.
In the Pre-Prep and Junior Department (Years 3 & 4) form teachers are mostly responsible for pastoral care. From Year 5, when the children start to move around the school for their lessons with specialist teachers, Housemasters have more of a pastoral role and a tutor system ensures that each child is cared for and guided in all matters during his or her time at school.
We offer weekly boarding for children in Years 7 & 8 providing those who are going to senior boarding schools with an introduction to boarding life in a familiar and friendly environment. Flexi-boarding is also available which is very popular with children and parents alike!
Expert coaching is given in a wide range of sports including rugby, soccer, hockey, netball, cricket, swimming, gymnastics, rounders, athletics, tennis, squash and shooting. Facilities include a magnificent indoor swimming pool, a large Sports Hall, an artificial grass all-weather pitch and running track, hard tennis courts, squash courts and an indoor .22 shooting range. This combination of coaching and facilities ensures we remain at national level in most sports. Specialist coaching for all sport starts in the Nursery!
Our state-of-the-art Jubilee Theatre provides a showcase for the many concerts and stunning productions staged by our excellent music and drama departments. A number of our pupils annually win music scholarships to their senior schools.
Our award-winning Art Department is housed in two art rooms. We have two Art teachers and an Artist-in-Residence. A large well-resourced Design Technology Department and expert teaching has resulted in several pupils winning DT scholarships to senior schools in recent years.
An extensive activity programme which is part of every school day in the Prep School provides all children with the opportunity to 'have a go' at a wide range of activities. We encourage all the children to try something different ~ many of our boys love cooking!
Holmewood is an exciting place for children ... please come and see for yourselves!
