School Profile

Great Houghton Hall is a mainly Georgian house (Grade II). The school enjoys a delightful site of very generous size just two and a half miles from the centre of Northampton. It benefits from being easily accessible while providing secure, rural surroundings of 26 acres in a conservation area.

GHPS is a well established school with many strengths, combining a very broad, inclusive approach with specialist expertise. The emphasis of the school is on the encouragement of the whole child; via assemblies that are Christian in ethos, in the classroom, on the games field, in relationships and through responsibilities. Children develop confidence and courtesy, self-discipline and self knowledge in a happy, purposeful environment, enjoying an outstanding staff:pupil ratio of 1:9. Our most recent ISI report observed that our pupils 'are notably well behaved, polite and hard working'.

Boys and girls join our 'outstanding' (Ofsted Report 2007) Early Years department from 12 months and most transfer to day or boarding, co-ed or single sex senior schools at 13+ via Common Entrance or Scholarship. These include the Bedford schools, Bloxham, Kimbolton, Malvern Girls College, Northampton High School for Girls, Northampton Grammar School, Oakham, Oundle, Rugby, Stowe, Uppingham and Wellingborough. Form teachers and subject specialists maintain high standards in line with and beyond the National Curriculum, supported where appropriate by an expert Special Educational Needs Department.

The buildings provide large, light classrooms, as well as a Science Laboratory, Theatre/Gymnasium, Library and dedicated facility for ICT, Art, Pottery, DT and Music. The school places strong emphasis on performing and visual arts.

In addition to basketball, netball, gymnastics and table tennis in the gym, the grounds offer an all-weather surface, tennis courts and excellent pitches for: rugby, netball, hockey, football, cricket, athletics and rounders. The range of extra activities includes: art, ballet, band, chess, choir, choristers, cookery, dance, drama, individual music tuition, instrumental groups, Girls' club, reading club and team training.

Nutritious lunches are cooked in the school kitchen, while breakfast and tea are available to fit in with parents' busy lives: we are open from 07.45 to 18.10. A lively programme of social events compliments regular charity fund-raising, directed amongst worthy causes towards Outspan School, Kampala, Uganda, where we sponsor two pupil's education.

The school has a contemporary outlook and a traditional ethos.
