Founded in 1512, it moved to its present site on the edge of the village in 1869 where it is in a beautiful position overlooking the Ribble Valley in the Yorkshire Dales and within convenient distance of Manchester, Leeds, Bradford and the Lakes. It has handsome buildings and the accommodation for both boys and girls has been completely refurbished and all student rooms are linked to the school's ICT network. A recent development programme includes refurbished science laboratories, a new dining hall, a floodlit synthetic hockey pitch, new sports hall and a library and information centre. The Junior School is on an adjacent site and continuous education is available from 3-18. Originally a boys' school, it first accepted girls in 1977 and became fully co-educational in 1983. The school prides itself on its happy atmosphere and offers an excellent all-round education. Examination results are good and the staff:pupil ratio is a favourable 1:7. Much importance is attached to personal courtesy and the school aims to develop the whole person whilst having proper regard for the importance of helping all pupils to achieve their best personal academic potential. There is a strong careers service. Languages, maths, science, music and art are particularly strong departments and there is a considerable strength in a variety of sports, games and outdoor pursuits. The school enjoys a good deal of success in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.Further information on Public Schools »
