CHURCHER'S COLLEGE was founded under the will of Richard Churcher in 1722. Churcher was a local philanthropist, whose wealth was generated by his interests in the East India Company. His will, dated 1722, decreed that the College was to educate 10 or 12 local boys from Petersfield, of any age from 9 to 14, in the arts of writing, arithmetic, mathematics and navigation so they could be apprenticed to masters of ships sailing in the East Indies. Richard Churcher died in 1723 and was buried in Funtingdon, the village of his birth.
The College was established as a non-denominational foundation under the terms of his will and has remained so ever since. The original accommodation was in the fine 1729 building, which still stands in College Street. However by the 1870s, pupil numbers had expanded substantially and additional space was required. A new site was located half-a-mile to the north of the original College, at the top of Ramshill. The new buildings were constructed between 1877 and 1881 and were built to accommodate 150 pupils.
