Cheltenham College is the oldest of the Victorian public schools, founded in 1841, and is predominantly a boarding school. Girls have been admitted to the Sixth Form for many years, and in September 1997 the College became fully co-educational. It is situated in its own spacious grounds near the centre of Cheltenham, a flourishing Cotswold town. The College has a fine academic record and a considerable reputation for its drama, art, music and sport. There are currently 595 pupils on the College roll, aged 13-18.
The College is delighted by the outcome of its recent ISI inspection, which judged the College "a strong and successful community where pupils are very well cared for; they achieve good standards in public examinations and high levels in a very wide range of activities".
The inspection report scrutinises a wide spectrum of College life, including the pupils' educational experience, the quality of teaching, the pastoral care and accommodation, and the effectiveness of leadership and management.
A fine picture of the College's strengths emerges from the thoroughly positive report:
+ Boarding is outstanding, with the dedication of Housemistresses and Housemasters and the overall quality of pastoral care for all boarding and day pupils highly praised. The care given to pupils is identified as a major strength.
+ Relationships within the College community, between staff and pupils and between pupils, are excellent.
+ The quality of teaching is invariably good, and some is outstanding; teachers know their pupils well and encourage them to develop enthusiasm for their work.
+ Pupils develop strong self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence, have high moral standards, a readiness to contribute to the common good and a respect for others.
+ The College fosters a deep sense of belonging in its pupils, who feel very loyal, connected and committed to their community and especially to their House.
+ A wide range of high-quality activities is provided.
+ The Headmaster's strategic leadership is very effective.
Cheltenham College Junior School is situated on the same campus as Cheltenham College in a beautiful setting with its own sports fields, lake and stunning views of Leckhampton Hill. Originally situated on the main College campus, it moved to its current site in 1908; in 2008 it celebrates its centenary. The Junior is fully co-educational, day and boarding, and takes pupils from 3 to 13, with the majority preparing for Scholarships and Common Entrance for the College. There are approximately 400 pupils.
Entry to the College at 13+ is via Academic Scholarship, Common Entrance, or for those not following a Common Entrance syllabus, through our own entrance tests. Candidates are asked to complete a questionnaire about themselves and attend a pre-assessment in Spring Year 7. This comprises a standardised test in Maths and English, a VRQ, a full report from the preparatory school, and time spent with other candidates, College pupils and staff getting to know the Houses. Guaranteed places will be offered wherever possible subject to, but with the expectation of, attaining the 50% pass mark at Common Entrance.
There is a small 14+ entry to start the two-year GCSE programme and pupils for this stage of entry sit examination papers in Maths, English, Science and French.
At 16+ for the two-year A Level course of study, pupils sit entrance papers in either November or March. For those living outside of the UK, we can send papers to their schools. All pupils must be registered prior to sitting examinations. Entry requirements are a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade B or above.
At 13+ and 16+ candidates can sit scholarships in academic, music, sport, art, and design technology. At 13+ there is also an all round potential scholarship. There are also scholarships at 11+ into the Junior School in academic, sport and music.
