School Profile

Box Hill School is a co-educational school, offering day and boarding places for 11-18 year olds.

Through our differentiated teaching and exceptional pastoral guidance comes academic success for our students. The difference in our approach however, comes from our determination and passion to develop the whole person and unearth qualities in our students that they did not know they possessed. Students amaze themselves when they see what they are capable of achieving and we watch them grow in confidence.

Our Round Square IDEALS of Internationalism, Democracy, Environmental concern, Adventure, Leadership and Service set us apart and we apply them every day in the classroom and through our vast range of activities and expeditions. It is important to us that we help produce well-adjusted, tolerant and confident young people with a sense of pride in themselves who are ready to greet the world with energy and enthusiasm.

Set in 40 acres, the school is surrounded by the Surrey countryside, but close to major road, rail and air links and only 40 minutes from central London.

Main school entrance ages are 11, 13 and 16 years. Under normal circumstances, we like to meet prospective pupils and their parents or guardians - this also gives you an opportunity to have a look around our campus facilities. Pupils are not selected on academic achievements alone although we ask them to sit a Maths and English test and supply two, most recent, school reports from their current school to help us with our assessment. For overseas students, we can arrange for the tests to be taken under supervision without having to come to the school, although face to face is still our preferred option.

The welfare of all our students is at the heart of our school. We make sure they have the structure and support they need by creating the right academic, social and emotional environment.

On arrival at Box Hill School, all students are allocated to a School House. The ethos of each House is based around the family, with Houseparents who are the guiding influence. Houseparents are supported by a resident assistant, the school nurses and other academic staff, who are always eager and on hand to help.

Each House has a common room where students get together and a kitchen where they can prepare and share light refreshments and snacks. Just as at home, pupils are loyal to their House and they enjoy many activities and competitions together. Our school places emphasis on positive relationships, close friendships and mutual respect.

Each student is assigned a personal tutor within their house - a member of teaching staff who supports their academic and pastoral development. There are a mix of ages within each tutor group which helps to promote friendship, support and responsibility.

For parents, we have set up a special website that will help them keep up to date with their child's progress, called ‘Parents In Touch’. It contains the latest House newsletters and blogs, homework comments and examination information and results. It also gives parents the opportunity to contact Houseparents and staff to discuss any points of interest or concern.

We believe that activities outside the classroom form an important part of education, and all students take part in weekly and termly activities. As well as this regular programme, junior years take part in expeditions around the UK twice a year. Students may also have the opportunity to participate in Round Square expeditions, carrying out community based activities in locations such as Peru, South Africa and India.
