Bedales was founded to be different - a humane and child-centred alternative to the authoritarian regimes of other schools at the time. Where they imposed conformity, we have nurtured individuality, initiative and an enquiring mind.
What we do has gradually been followed by other schools. How we do it is, we believe, still unique.
Our students settle in quickly when they go on to university, because life at Bedales resembles university more than school. They are already used to organising their own time; pursuing their studies in depth; mixing with and debating with their elders; and balancing creative, sporting, practical and academic interests. We work to a timetable at Bedales, but it is flexible enough to encompass all these activities.
We maintain discipline, but we believe it arises best from self-discipline and from caring about others. Only if education and dialogue fail do we resort to the rule-book.
We play many competitive sports - not to turn out aggressively competitive pupils, but because it encourages individuals to stretch themselves.
Traditional schools have their chapel: we have our wonderful oak-beamed library and theatre, where craftsmanship, engagement and the beauty of materials and form embody our founder's ideal of developing 'head, hand and heart'.
Our students are, above all, happy and at ease within themselves. If we sound right for your child, I invite you to visit us, meet them, and experience the special atmosphere of Bedales for yourself.Further information on Public Schools »
