School Profile

'It has been interesting to note how more and more families from the south are coming to visit our School,' says Headmaster, David Ewart. 'It may be that Schools like ours are seen as offering more space and time for children to develop away from the hustle and bustle of city life. At the same time, we do hear that our annual boarding fee of under £18,000 is extremely competitive, and we aim to keep it that way.'

Set in its own fifty acre estate in the clear air of Teesdale, County Durham, Barnard Castle School offers a first class boarding and day education to boys and girls aged 4-18. Medium sized at 540 pupils in the Senior School and 200 in the Prep School, the School provides girls and boys, day and boarding, with security in a traditional house and tutor system, friendship in the classroom and extra-curricular activities, and challenge.

Combining academic rigour and personal development, the School is one of the top 5 for rugby in the country, and boasts one of the best Chapel Choirs in the North East, stretched weekly within its Christian Foundation, and annually in Durham Cathedral and York Minster.

In the past two years pupils have achieved record GCSE and A level results. In 2008 its GCSE results placed it in the top 10% of all UK schools for Value Added. Almost 60% achieved A-B grade at A level, and every year its leavers go on to study at the top Universities across the UK. Bucking national trends the School retains its insistence on separate Sciences at GCSE, and its most recent (£1.5m) investment is a brand new Physics and ICT Block.

Outside the classroom the school offers over a hundred activities, its extra-curricular programme being described as 'outstanding' by Ofsted in 2009.

'We are committed to finding ways of bringing out the best in all our pupils,' says David Ewart. 'We value those who play chess for their House as much as we value those who play sport for their country.'

The School is easily accessible from the south and other parts of the UK by road, rail and air. Darlington Station is 2 ½ hours from Kings Cross, and Durham Tees Valley and Newcastle Airports serve airports across the UK.
