Bancroft's School is an independent, co-educational day school with about 900 pupils aged between 7 and 19. In the past 250 years it has gradually developed from a small, charitable boys' boarding school in the Mile End Road to its present form.

The decision to adopt co-education placed Bancroft's in the forefront of a major educational development whose benefits are acknowledged by more schools every year. Boys and girls at Bancroft's today are equal in number and in academic and sporting attainment.

The greater part of the school was erected about 100 years ago, when Bancroft's moved to Woodford and the more recent buildings have been designed in a sympathetic style. In addition to the well-equipped classrooms the School has an excellent Library, a modern Sports Centre with Swimming Pool and Squash Courts, a well proportioned Hall for musical and theatrical productions and a splendid Creative Activities Centre with Art and Ceramics rooms, Technology Unit with facilities for Electronics, and a suite of Computer Rooms. The Preparatory Department, remarkable for its effective design and excellent resources, was opened on a secluded part of the main school site in 1990.

Throughout its history the School has benefited greatly from its association with the Worshipful Company of Drapers in the City of London. The School was founded under the terms of the Will of Francis Bancroft who was a Liveryman of the Company. The Drapers' Company still provides the majority of the Governing body and gives financial strength. The generous provision of scholarships and new developments, such as the Creative Activities Centre and Preparatory Department, owe much to the Drapers' support.Further information on Colleges »
